Minkyu Kim is an artist and creative technologist.

He works with physical computing, robotics, interactive systems, and motion graphics, exploring how emerging technologies affect humanity through the use of technology itself.

He graduated from Seoul Institute of the Arts and is currently studying Design & Technology at Parsons, The New School.

Artist Statement

I aim to reveal how emerging technologies can unsettle an individual’s humanity by using technology itself as an artistic medium. New technologies quickly become part of our daily lives, but our awareness and attitudes toward how we should accept and use them often do not develop at the same speed. I focus on how technology affects individual humanity within this gap.

I see humanity through four elements: Freedom, True Self, Agency, and Imperfection. An unhealthy use of technology can distance individuals from these elements. Examples include cognitive outsourcing caused by relying on AI for decision-making, and the loss of freedom caused by the collection and use of personal data.

My work transforms these hidden impacts of technology into physical and sensory experiences. Rather than understanding technology only as information, I want audiences to encounter and experience it directly through tangible objects, systems, and movement. To create these experiences, I use physical computing, robotics, and interactive systems as my main media.

Rather than suggesting practical solutions for how technology should be used, my work proposes an awareness and attitude toward how we relate to it. I hope audiences reflect on whether technology is weakening their own humanity and consider how they can preserve these four elements of humanity. Ultimately, I aim for a relationship in which people are not led by technology, but use it with agency, grounded in a strong sense of humanity, to expand human possibilities.
